MechWarrior III in a virtualized environment has a tendency to randomly send vehicles flying several kilometers into the sky at breakneck speeds, eventually throwing them off the map and leaving you unable to complete missions. MechWarrior II (at least the Titanium edition) on a very fast PC has weird quirks involving accel/deceleration, weight, and jumpjet capacity. Plus, with virtualization, the graphics and sound hardware that’s emulated tends to stress more application compatibility, and aren’t exactly optimal for virtualized Windows gaming. While in theory it sure does sound nice, many of these games were created in a chaotic time of hardware and their related drivers. Windows versions range from 1.0 to 3.11, 95, 98, 98se, ME, 2000, XP, Vista, 7 and the upcoming Windows 8.I initially went the VMware route. ![]() ![]() Also for users of 64 bit Windows, Microsoft Virtual PC may be used to install an older version of Windows that operates independantly of the native OS. This gives Windows users access to every Might and Magic game ever created. The free program DOSBox allows Windows users to play their classic DOS Might and Magic games on their modern PCs with little configuration. ![]() Windows enjoys a hearty backwards compatibility, with the ability for 32 bit versions to run most older software designed even for Windows 3.1 and 64 bit versions to run 32 bit software from Windows 95 onwards. Windows 95 marked Windows' start as a well known Gaming Platform and established a standardized platform for Video Cards to use via Direct X. Windows originally started as a mere graphical shell for MS-DOS to compete with early mouse driven GUI interfaces appearing in Unix operating systems and the Mac OS before becoming a fully fledged operating system. The most widely used operating system worldwide with an 85-90% usage. The gaming platform of choice for the vast majority of Might and Magic fans. ![]()
